Background

Our client, one of the largest Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, was looking for a solution to help them achieve a fully autonomous production line for the placement of washers in the interior of one of their EV models.

Challenge

The interior of one of the EV models entails both a small hole and washer to be recognized, and then for the washer to be placed on the hole. This problem introduced challenges due to highly reflective metal pieces and small holes which are difficult for most vision systems to capture.

Solution

By combining our vision software with our BP-L camera , we enabled the robot to recognize the washers and placement points in 2D, 2.5D, and 3D.  

The selected feature points of the objects could then be identified and evaluated with near-perfect accuracy, resulting in 3D box picking application scenarios with picking precision of 1 milli-meter. The system is able to pick at a rate of 5 seconds per piece using a wide 1 square metre field of view.
